I think that James Durham was the son of either John or Isaac Durham of Edgefield District, South Carolina.

The 1850 census of Edgefield District shows their mother Nancy with James still in her household and Steward/t living next door.

Nancy Durham household, 1850 U.S. Census, Edgefield County, South Carolina, p. 61, family no. 473. Nancy Durham, age 54; James Durham, age 15; Marion J. Durham, age 14. Lived next to: Stuart Durham household, 1850 U.S. Census, Edgefield County, South Carolina,p. 31A, p. 61, family no. 474. Stuart Durham, age 22; Letisia Durham, age 20, Caroline Rowe, age 26.

On the 1860 census Stuart/Stewart/Steward is a soldier in Nicollet Co., Minnesota and James M. Durham was a private stationed at Fort Monroe, Elizabeth City, Virginia.

1862- There are military enlistment records for James Durham of Edgefield, SC and his brother Stewart/Stuart Durham at Mt. McHenry in Maryland. Both men were already soldier; this was a reenlistment. I think James stayed in the Baltimore area after the war.

Ancestry.com. U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007. Original data: Register of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914; (National Archives Microfilm Publication M233, 81 rolls); Records of the Adjutant General’s Office, 1780’s-1917, Record Group 94; National Archives, Washington, D.C. Steward Durham, born Edgefield, South Carolina, age 32, enlisted 1 August 1862 at (looks like Ft. McHenry). In Sept. James Durham of Edgefield also enlisted at the same place He was 24 or 29, hard to read. Both men listed their occupations as soldier.

Nancy Durham's husband deserted the family, I think, before the 1850 census. By 1860 she is living in York Co., SC with her daughter who had remarried and left Edgefield. Another son removed to Texas and my ancestor William Durham was the only one to remain in the area.
Please give me your feedback.

Thanks, Drew G. Welch
