David Carroll Durham, 89, went to be with his Heavenly Father and the loved ones that have passed before him on Friday, January 18, 2013. He was born on November 20, 1923 in Rocking-ham County, NC to the late Walter Edward and Minnie Carroll Durham, and was a proud U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a member of American Legion Post 310. David retired as a pipefitter and instructor for shop 56 from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth after 38 years of service. He was a deacon emeritus and choir member at Pinecrest Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Wilson Durham; his second wife, Emogene “Jean” Laughlin Cox; a daughter, Sandra Burgess; a sister, Stella Hainsworth; and four brothers, Raymond, Walter, Guy and Donald Durham.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan Smith and husband Jim, Sara Kelley and husband Chuck; a son, David Michael Durham; a son in-law, Tom Burgess; two step-daughters, Rita Lytle and husband Larry, Martha Pierce and husband Frank; two sisters, Margaret Sharpe and Barbara Walker; eleven grandchildren, Nathan Burgess, Michael Durham, Erica Stietenroth, Jenna Hanson, Brandon Lytle, Trent Pierce, Tyler Pierce, Carol Ann Limon, Holly Pierce, Grayson Kelley and Kieran Kelley; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend of the family Martha Smith.

A funeral will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7 – 8 PM. www.SturtevantFuneral-Home.com
