You are correct about the older boys in the 1870 census being Rector. James W
Durham is a different issue. I do believe he is William D (Billy Rock) Durham,
born 17 Aug 1861. And I now believe he is the son of Joseph and Matilda, though
he was born about 19 months prior to their Mar 1863 marriage. He is listed an
1877 Rockcastle court case in which a lien holder is suing to get property Joseph
owned money on when he died in 1874. The Durham estate lost the property and
it appears to have evicted Matilda from the home place. This loss appeared to
put Matilda in destitute circumstance, I found two Laurel County court awards
to a person I believed to be Matilda to help support. In 1879, Matilda married
John Norris and is found in 1880 Rockcastle census. It appears John died prior
to 1873, because Matilda bought a small farm in adjoining Lincoln County and
moved there with most of her children, both Rector and Durham. Going back to
Joseph Durham, 1818 1874, I have found all most of his first wife. He
may have married at about 18 years old and moved to Indiana. They had at least
3 children: Julia Ann, 1838-1924; John Hardin, 1842-1926; and Mary A, 1848-1911.
Julia Ann married in Rockcastle in 1857, which leads to my speculation that her
mother may have died and she was sent to relatives in KY. John and Mary appear
to have remained Indiana, Mary marrying there about 1864 and I believe are in
the 1870 Jackson County IN census, they are in Rockcastle KY by 1880 census.
Except for a brief period around 1880, John H appears to have lived and died
in Jackson County IN. Of the two death certificates Ive seen for these
three children, none names their mother. I do have significant information for
descendants of Joseph Durham and will be happy provide. Joseph and Matilda are
my G G/Ps.

Joseph Durham, 1818-1874 is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery , located on the
banks of the Rockcastle River , about six miles up stream from Livingston . Phillip
Rector is also buried there. Both have rough stones with data scratched in, they
are almost illegible now. According to a great grandson, Thomas Rector, son of
Phillip and Matilda installed the markers. Thomas and his wife are also buried
in this cemetery; they have a professional grade marker.
There are Durham lines of the same era in Casey County , in Laurel County ; and
in Boyle County that I have not been able to connect. Both my Durham and the
Boyle County line were in Jackson County Indiana in early/mid 1800s. There was
also Durham lines in Pulaski County and Bell County that I have not attempted
to research.
