2. Joseph DURHAM was born about 1784 in Kentucky.1 From: "D E Miller" <dmiller655@fuse.net>

I have been out of town and unable to participate in recent discussions re; John Bugg and Martha Bugg.

Question? Does anyone know for sure if John who married Martha Bugg was born in Henrico County, VA>?

I am descended from Sarah Durham b 1817 (est from census) who married Richard Miller. Richard was probably born Stationcamp and Crooked Creek near Hinton's Trace in Estill County, Ky. Sarah was from southern Rockcastle County near the Rockcastle River.

I have posted the facts of Jesse Durham's death in Valonia, near Medora, Jackson COunty, IN. on Oct 30, 1850. (son of John and Martha) I am interested in learning more about his siblings.

I believe Jackson County of Indiana is a clue to opening up new relationships within the Durham line.

Starting with a Joseph Durham, b ca 1785, (Est from census) who first married Elizabeth Chasteen Adams on Nov 13, 1813 in Rockcastle County, KY. I have not seen any mention of this Joseph Durham on this list and seems no one has really been aware his existence. I SUSPECT that my Sarah Durham would be their daughter. Josiah Hardin, son of William and Jemima, was bondsman. Joseph later (Bef 1822) married Elizabeth Chasteen's sister Nancy Chasteen. The sisters were daughters of Rev Was Soldier James Chasteen and Nancy Canaday. The Chasteen, Hardin and Durham families were very close lived near one another near the salt peter cave in southern Rockcastle County, just across the river from Laurel County.

Back to Joseph and Nancy Durham and their daughter who married a Lawson. I have the following details;

From Eldon E. Lawson, August 1991 (in part)
"A death certificate of Martha Ann (Durham) Lawson is on record in Jackson County, IN. She was born Mar. 10, 1832 in Rockcastle County, KY. and died Mar. 29, 1923 in Jackson County, IN. near Medora, at age 91. She is interred alongside John Lawson in Brown Cemetery, about four miles from Medora. John Mack Lawson, b. May5, 1873, died Jan. 13, 1941, was her only child. John lived his entire life near Medora.

******** Martha's death certificate names her parents as Joseph Durham and Nancy Chasteen, both born KY. Assuming that Martha Ann and Nancy were sisters, these would be the parents of Nancy also.

The newspaper obituary of Martha Ann from the Brownstown Banner, April 4, 1923, reports her birth place as Rockcastle County, KY. and that she was the youngest daughter of a family of ten children, and that she moved from KY. to IN. in the spring of 1860."

The wording of Martha Ann's obituary creates some doubt about the exact order of birth of the ten children of Joseph and Nancy Chasteen Durham. If Martha Ann was the youngest daughter of ten children, could she have had younger brothers? Whatever the case, it would appear that Nancy would be just one step older than Martha Ann based on the fact that Nancy was b. ca. 1830 and Martha Ann in the spring of 1832, (Mar. 10.)"

IN SUMMARY-
I believe there is a connection between Joseph and Jesse Bugg Durham and the
above facts of Martha Chasteen Lawson moving to IN in 1860 are more than
co-incidence. I have not been able to ID the ten children of Joseph and
Martha Chasteen but do know one was named Jesse.

I am also of the opinion that William Durham, born ca 1773 in NC is also
related to this Joseph Durham and that William Green Durham born 1782-1790
and married to Judith Ann Hardin may be the brother to Joseph.

There is one other Durham also implicated in this family and he would be
this Elijah, can anyone add to the following, especially Gestine Hedgepath
(Gentry) or his wife Sarah?? (Might be a Gentry and Gestine her mother??)
[DEM note; my Sarah Durham signed the pension application when Gestine filed
for widows pension.

I did find Elijah Durham on the 1850 Rockcastle census as 61 years old b. SC. wife Sarah. HH # 290 Southern District.

Elijah Durham 61 b. SC
Sarah 48 b. NC
David 10 b. KY
James 9 b. KY

then in 1860 Elijah must have died before the census as the following is found
Sarah Durham 57 b. NC
David 18 b. KY
James 17 b. KY
Gestine Gentry 84 b. NC

That's all for now,

D E Miller

Gene,
There is certainly enough circumstancial evidence to support a relationship of your George and Huldah to Joseph and Elizabeth / Nancy Chasteen. I do not think George, son of Joseph Durham and Elizabeth Chasteen to be the one married to Huldah Baker but possible a son. The dates associated with George (b ca 1819 per 1850 Laurel Co. KY) He was 31 in 1850 and no children or wife was listed with him and his father Joseph (spelled Denham). The Martha listed with George (1819) was Martha Ann who married John Lawson Jr. son of JOhn and Elizabeth (Unknown).

Knowing the area of Rockcastle County, north of the Rockcastle River, and near to Fletcher's Salt Mine and the original location of The Pleasnat Run Missionary Church in 1820, helps to put the Durham, Hardin, and Chasteen families into some perspective.

I also believe,(Circumstancially) that the Reverend William Martin Durham born ca 1818 and married to Lettie Baker, was a brother to George and son of Joseph and Elizabeth Chasteen. I have tried to connect Lettie Baker to Huldah with no success but certainly seems likely. Lettie was the d/o Wansley Baker Jr and Lettia "Letty" Hendren. Most of these folks migrated from Rowan County, NC about 1803. The WIlliam Hardin line came from Grayson County, VA. very near to the NC border.

I have tried for many years to work these lines and have some success but proof is very hard to come by. It also seems family traditions are deep set and sometimes hard to change.

Darrell Miller

PS I also think Joseph Durham was a nephew to William Durham and Jemima and brother to Wm Green Durham married to Judith Ann Hardin.

The Hardin, Chasteen and Durham families all held land near Crooked Creek (Originally Brush Creek before Rockcastle) and near the Salt Cave and the Pleasant Run Missionary Church.

Comment: This is proof to me that this Joseph Durham was connected by marriage to the Revolutionary War Soldier James Chasteen who was a part of the following; (DEM)

(Article printed in "People of Rockcastle County, KY. 1992")

"Pleasant Run Missionary Baptist Church was organized on November 2, 1820 at the home of John O'Neal on Brush Creek in Madison County, KY., with eight constituent members, James and Nancy Chasteen, William Hardin, William, Nancy and Sarah Durham, Elijah Jules and Sarah Jackson. The presbytery was as follows, David Haines and John Colyer from Mt. Vernon, William Cook and Mourning Roberts from Scaffold Cane and William Kindred, William Haggard Jr., Nathaniel Kindred and John Hockersmith from Red Lick. The church was soon moved from the mouth of Little Rockcastle thence to the river near McCalf's ford thence to its present location, where a new building was constructed in 1907, on a plot of land donated by C. H. York. This building was destroyed by a tornado on April 3, 1974. Dedicated members soon erected a new building near by, with the first service being held on August 8,
1974."

To continue with Joseph Durham and his marriages;

Marriages 1786-1822
Nathan Adams married Elizabeth Chasteen 20 Dec 1809, Bondsman William Adams, father of bride James Chasteen, returned 21 Dec 1809

> From James Chasteen Pension Applcation:
Statement by Commisioner Winfred Scott, Memo date illegible. "They (James and Nancy Chasteen) had six children, the following names were given: Elizabeth, who was the oldest and who married ______Durham and she stated in 1843 that she was about Fifty nine or sixty years of age; John. who stated in 1843 that he was about fifty-two years of age; Polly, Jesse, and Nancy." Repectfully, Winfred Scott, Comissioner

Then this record;

Joseph Durham married MRS ELIZABETH (DEM- Chasteen) ADAMS on 15 Nov 1813 the Bondsman was Josiah HARDIN.

These records establish that Joseph Durham had married Chasteen sisters, Elizabeth and Nancy, daughters of James Chasteen and Nancy Canaday.

Can we agree at this point?

Gail,

It would be so easy if this were all laid before us but not so. I have never found ANY record to identify all the children of Joseph Durham and his children by Elizabeth and Nancy Chasteen.

I have found the marriage date of 13 Nov 1813 in Rockcastle Co/, Ky for the marriage to Elizabeth Chasteen. The Sur Bond by Josiah Hardin. She had previously married Nathan Adams 20 Dec 1809 in Madison Co. Ky Sur Bond was William Adams. James Chasteen FB.

Remember Rockcastle was formed from Madison Co and the area near the Salt Cave was known as Brush Creek and after Rockcastle was formed it became known as Crooked Creek. This makes a big difference in identifying where people lived and died.

Josiah Hardin has been proven to be the son of William Hardin and Jemima. I have tried to reason out why he was the bondsman for Joseph Durham as Josiah had come to Madison Co to bulid a cabin for his mother and his siblings just outside the perimeter of Fort Boonesborough. Josiah's father was William Hardin.

July 25, 1998 Betty L Keays 3201 NE 56th Court, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., 33308

William Hardin born ca 1750-60 N Carolina [?] died May 1803 Buried Grayson Co., Va. Married ca 1780 Jemima born 1760 N Carolina. She died after 1860 Rockcastle County, Ky., Buried possibly in Old Silver Creek., Ky.

***********************************************
William had 200 acres by Land Warrant of State of Virginia in Grayson county, Va. on the Little Fox Creek, off the New River, Va., His estate was inventoried on 3-5-1803.

William was a Revolutionary War Soldier. Served in Cox's Command Volunteer Militia 1782. Virginia Freeholder of 200 acres land on dividing Ridge between Elk Creek and Little Fox Creek. "Hardin's Ridge" Independence, Virginia Grayson Co., Aided Whigs against Tory invasion.

************************************************
> From Tom Hardin:
My line comes from William Hardin 1750 and Jemima (unknown) They were from Grayson Co. Va. He died in May of 1803 and Jemima moved the whole family to the wilderness area outside of Ft Boonebourgh in 1805/06. She later moved to Rockcastle Co and lived to be 105 years old. She was the mother of Gabriel, Martha, JOsiah, William, Dudley, Elizabeth, James N, Susanna and Mary. ELizabeth married Johnson Chasteen and James N married Mary Susan Chasteen.

I bring in the Hardin information at this point because of the people mentioned in the founding of the Pleasant Run Missionary Baptist Church and the marriage of Judith Ana Hardin to William Green Durham. I have never found proof of Judith being the sister to Josiah but then again, I never found proof she was not.

> From Sarah White:CBSWHITE@
"The 1831 Rockcastle tax list said that William Durham owned 51 acres on Brush Creek. It also said that his land had originally been entered in the name of WILLIAM HARDIN,"

Sarah continues, " I think that is pretty convincing evidence that Judith was William Hardin's daughter. Apparently William Hardin either gave or sold those 51 acres to William Durham. "

Darrell's notes,

I don't think William Hardin, husband of Jemima ever came to Ky or owned land in Madison or Rockcastle County, KY I believe the William Hardin who owned the 51 acres on Brush Creek was none other than William Allensworth Hardin who married Mary Anderson and were members of the Scaffoldcane Church. He was also married to Elizabeth Roberts, d/o Mourning Roberts.

I do think Joseph Durham to be the brother of William Green Durham who married Judith Ann Hardin.

Darrell,
I've been looking in on the information exchange for Joseph Durham of 1785. It is pretty much the same as you have given me earlier. I don't want to interrupt the flow of the information, though I have some questions you may be able to shed some light on. This may be the best time to address the Chasteen Family. I have James Chasteen, abt 1760-28 Feb 1841 KY + Nancy Kennedy, abt 1765 VA - abt 1849 Rockcastle County, both buried in Johnnetta Cemetery, Rockcastle County, KY. Their children were:

1. Elizabeth Chasteen, abt 1789 - ?? + (1) Nathan Adams in 1809 and (2) Joseph Durham in 1813 ?. They must have divorced after a short time because Elizabeth is still alive in 1843.
2. Johnson Chasteen, 1792-1852 + Elizabeth Hardin, 1794-abt 1853. They married 24 Mar 1818 Rockcastle and both buried Johnnetta.
3. Mary Susan Chasteen, abt 1793-unknown + James N Hardin, abt 1796-1885. They married 1818.
4. Jesse Chasteen, abt 1795-abt 1856 + Levilet Flowers, abt 1795-abt 1866. They married 1815 in Estill County KY.
5. Ann Chasteen, I have no vitals for Ann, she married a George Tankersley abt 1820 in VA. They may not have come to KY, but their son, Thomas J married the daughter of Johnson and Elizabeth Hardin Chasteen in 1847 Rockcastle County.
6. Nancy Chasteen, abt 1800-bef 1850 + Joseph Durham, abt 1785-aft 1850. From your information, I gather Nancy is the second wife of Joseph Durham and mother of his known children. If they had ten children, with the youngest born abt 1832, they must have married before 1820?

List,
This is my response to Cindy Crawford re her questions about William Hardin, father of Judith Ann

Cindy,

I think we may be mis interpreting what Sarah White stated, in that we or (Me) had the William Hardin's mixed-up. Therefore my comment about the husband of Jemima not being in Ky as he died in 1803. That possibly eliminates William and Jemima as parents of Judith Ann. We know that Judith Ann married William Green Durham and that He is on the 1850 Laurel County Census. Even though this census says he was born in TN other census says he was born in NC.

> From Sarah White;

"I have been looking at the records of Tilford Durham that Leonita found, trying to find support for her theory that William Green Durham (1782) and 1790 William Durham were the same man.

Laurel County, KY. Court Order Book E, Oct term 1860, pg 36.

"To W G Durham to aid in the support of Tilford Durham $15.00."
That above record specifies the middle initial "G" so that man is prpbably William Green Durham. If William Green Durham felt obligated to take in Tilford Durham there had to be some kind of relationship between them.

> From Book E, pg 109 Jan 1863.
"The faith of the Court having been pledged to allow Tilford Durham the sum of $15 to aid in his support for the year ending 1st Oct 1862 is for the benefit of James Casteel and levied levied for & there is allowed the sum of $20 to aid in the support of Tilford Durham the ensuing year for the Oct term 1863 & James Casteel is to have the benefit of said allowance or his proportion from Oct to the present time. "

So we know that James Casteel took responsibilty for Tilford a few years after William Green Durham was raising him. Tilford's father was Lemuel Casteel (Brother of James Casteel). But when I first read the above court record, I didn't understand why James Casteel felt obligated to take care of his brother's illegitimate child. Lemuel Casteel was alive well on this date, and could have easily taken care of Tilford himself if he wanted to. But didn't William G Duham move in with James Casteel sometime between the 1860 and th 1870 census? Maybe thats why the courts transferred responsibilty from W G Durham to James Casteel. William G Durham must have taken Tilford with him when he went to live with his son-in-law James Casteel.

Tilford was bound out by the courts in 1865, when he was 7 or 8, which I think was the age a child had to be in order to be bound out.

I think those records are very important. They don't state that William Green was Tilford's grandfather, but they do imply a very strong link between the two. It seems natural to me that Tilford's grandfather would want to assume responsibilties for him after Mary Durham died (1860]."
Sarah

> From Cindy Crawford;
"Lemuel Casteel married Minerva Durham before he had the affair with Mary Durham. This is the timeline- Lemuel married Minerva in 1842, Minerva died in 1845, Mary Durham had daughters Susan Paralee and Charlotte Lottie in 1849 and 1852. Lemuel married Henrietta Moberly in 1855, and Mary Durham had son John Tilford in 1857/58."

So if we can prove Joseph (1784) to be the brother to the William Green Durham who married Judith Hardin, then the William Durham who owned the 51 acres may have been the father of Judith Ann and not the husband of Jemima.

So bottom line, Who was the William Durham who entered the 51 acres on Brush Creek in 1831?

Would he not be the same William Durham as in the church founding?
