Subject: Re: My grandmother was a Durham

My grandmother was Arlene Delilah Durham, born July 4, 1904, I believe in Gallatin, Sumner County, TN. Her parents were John Breckenridge Durham and Myrtle Campbell.
You have her listed at Allene, plus you have her born in 1905. That's possible from Census records, but she always told us 7/4/04. She was J.B. [also called "Breckie"] and Myrtle's only child.
P.S. 8/17/2012. I applied to the Daughters of the Confederacy. A check on cemetery records show Arlene's headstone reads July 4, 1905. So it sounds like your original research was correct.

Arlene married Walter Kenneth Scott from Ohio. They had one son, Kenneth Breckenridge Scott born June 22, 1936 in Ohio.

Thus our Durham line ends with Arlene. She is buried in the Gallatin cemetery beside her parents.

Oh, one story Arlene told me that you might find interesting. We kids wondered why my dad's middle name was Breckenridge. Kind of a strange name we thought. She said that there were 4 brothers in the Civil War under 4 different generals. They made a pact that when the war was over, they'd each name a son after the general they served under. Evidently, my line devolved from the brother serving under Major General John C. Breckenridge. I have no way to verify the story, and I don't even know if the brothers were Durhams or Campbells.
P.S. 8/17/2012. The research for my application to the DOC confirms that James Henry Durham, my great-great grandfather, was in the Civil War.

If anyone is interested, I donated a large photograph album that had belonged to Arlene and her parents to the Sumner County Museum. It's likely that family members, Durhams/Campbells/Rippys/and others may find relatives in the pictures.

Thank you,
Cynthia Jean Scott
