Died in His 95th Year
_________

On Thursday night June 14, 1906 Mr. Philip DURHAM died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. H. Watlington, where he and his wife have lived for 10 years.
We should not mourn as those with out hope. We should look forward to the bright resurrection morning when friend will again meet friend when father, mother, children and grandchildren will be reunited and sad partings will be no more.

He was born in Bedford County, Va. Oct 4 1811, and came both fatherless and penniless to Kentucky with his mother when he was only six years old of age. His father died when he was very small and left him to support his mother and himself.

When a young man he used to travel a great deal on flat boats. Making a trip from
Stevensport to New Orleans he accumulated enough money to buy a farm in Daviess County, but finding the land so flat that his health was begining to fail, he came to Breckinridge County.

At twenty - eight years of age he was married to Edith E. Haynes, and they were blessed with six children James and Charlie DURHAM, of Hardinsburg, Mrs. Lucy T. Smith, of Arkansas, Mrs. Elizabeth Palfreeman, of Illinois, and John and Simeon DURHAM, deceased.

Mr. Durham was married the second time to Mary Hook, daughter of John and Lucretia Hook, of Hardinsburg, and six children were added to their family: Mrs. Julius Snyder, Mrs. Milton West, Mrs. James Snyder, Mrs. N. H. Watlington, Mrs. Edgar Goodman and Mrs. J. V. St. Clair, all of Breckinridge County.

After returning from Daviess County he bought a farm on Jewel's Creek and while there he accumulated 1,000 acres of land and a good sum of money. During the Civil War he exchanged a large sum of his green back money for gold, thus depreciating the value one - half, and after all loss and trouble he was able to give each of his ten children about $ 1,000 and leaving his widow an equal sum.

In politics he was a Republican. The first President he voted for was Andrew Jackson and the last one Theodore Roosevelt. He moved to Hardinsburg about thirty years ago, where he remained until the time of his death. Mr. Durham joined the Methodist Church early in life and always lived a Christian life,
ever ready to do his masters will.
